SECTION ONE

Chapters 1-36, I-XXXVI

SECTION ONE

Chapters 1-6, I-VI

Chapter 1, I

1. The words of the blessing of Enoch, wherewith he blessed the elect and righteous, who will be living in the day of tribulation, when all the wicked and godless are to be removed.

Chapter 1, I

1. The word of the blessing of Enoch, how he blessed the elect and the righteous, who were to exist in the time of trouble; rejecting all the wicked and ungodly.

2. And he took up his parable and said -Enoch a righteous man, whose eyes were opened by God, saw the vision of the Holy One in the heavens, which the angels showed me, Enoch, a righteous man, who was with God, answered and spoke, while his eyes were open, and while he saw a holy vision in the heavens. This the angels showed me.
and from them I heard everything, and from them I understood as I saw, but not for this generation, but for a remote one which is for to come. 3. Concerning the elect I said, and took up my parable concerning them:

2. From them I heard all things, and understood what I saw; that which will not take place in this generation, but in a generation which is to succeed at a distant period, on account of the elect.

3. Upon their account I spoke and conversed with him,

The Holy Great One will come forth from His dwelling,

who will go forth from his habitation, the Holy and Mighty One, the God of the world:

4. And the eternal God will tread upon the earth, (even) on Mount Sinai,
[And appear from His camp]
And appear in the strength of His might from the heaven of heavens.

4. Who will hereafter tread upon Mount Sinai; appear with his hosts; and be manifested in the strength of his power from heaven.

5. And all shall be smitten with fear
And the Watchers shall quake,
And great fear and trembling shall seize them unto the ends of the earth.

5. All shall be afraid, and the Watchers be terrified.

6. Great fear and trembling shall seize them, even to the ends of the earth.

6. And the high mountains shall be shaken,
And the high hills shall be made low,
And shall melt like wax before the flame

The lofty mountains shall be troubled, and the exalted hills depressed, melting like a honeycomb in the flame.

7. And the earth shall be wholly rent in sunder,
And all that is upon the earth shall perish,
And there shall be a judgement upon all (men).

8. But with the righteous He will make peace.
And will protect the elect,
And mercy shall be upon them.

The earth shall be immerged, and all things which are in it perish; while judgment shall come upon all, even upon all the righteous:

7. But to them shall he give peace: he shall preserve the elect, and towards them exercise clemency.

And they shall all belong to God,
And they shall be prospered,
And they shall all be blessed.

And He will help them all,
And light shall appear unto them,
And He will make peace with them'.

8. Then shall all belong to God; be happy and blessed; and the splendour of the Godhead shall illuminate them.

Chapter 2, II
Jude 1:14-16
14. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying,
9. And behold! He cometh with ten thousands of His holy ones 1. Behold, he comes with ten thousands of his saints, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
To execute judgement upon all, to execute judgment upon them, 15. To execute judgment upon all,
And to destroy all the ungodly: and destroy the wicked,
And to convict all flesh and reprove all the carnal and to convince all that are ungodly among them
Of all the works of their ungodliness which they have ungodly committed, for everything which the sinful and ungodly have done, of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed,
And of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. and committed against him. and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.
16. These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.

Chapter 2, II

Chapter 3, III

1. Observe ye everything that takes place in the heaven,

1. All who are in the heavens know what is transacted there.

how they do not change their orbits, and the luminaries which are in the heaven, how they all rise and set in order each in its season, and transgress not against their appointed order.

2. They know that the heavenly luminaries change not their paths; that each rises and sets regularly, every one at its proper period, without transgressing the commands, which they have received.

2. Behold ye the earth, and give heed to the things which take place upon it from first to last, how steadfast they are, how none of the things upon earth change, They behold the earth, and understand what is there transacted, from the beginning to the end of it.
but all the works of God appear to you. 3. Behold the summer and the winter, how the whole earth is filled with water, and clouds and dew and rain lie upon it.

3. They see that every work of God is invariable in the period of its appearance. They behold summer and winter: perceiving that the whole earth is full of water; and that the cloud, the dew, and the rain refresh it.

Chapter 3, III

Chapter 4 VI

Observe and see how (in the winter) all the trees seem as though they had withered and shed all their leaves, except fourteen trees, which do not lose their foliage but retain the old foliage from two to three years till the new comes.

1. They consider and behold every tree, how it appears to wither, and every leaf to fall off, except of fourteen trees, which are not deciduous; which wait from the old, to the appearance of the new leaf, for two or three winters.

Chapter 4, IV

Chapter 5, V

And again, observe ye the days of summer how the sun is above the earth over against it. And you seek shade and shelter by reason of the heat of the sun, and the earth also burns with growing heat, and so you cannot tread on the earth, or on a rock by reason of its heat.

1. Again they consider the days of summer, that the sun is upon it at its very beginning; while you seek for a covered and shady spot on account of the burning sun; while the earth is scorched up with fervid heat, and you become incapable of walking either upon the ground or upon the rocks in consequence of that heat.

Chapter 5, V

Chapter 6, VI

1. Observe ye how the trees cover themselves with green leaves and bear fruit: wherefore give ye heed and know with regard to all His works, and recognize how He that liveth for ever hath made them so.

1. They consider how the trees, when they put forth their green leaves, become covered, and produce fruit; understanding everything, and knowing that He who lives for ever does all these things for you:

2. And all His works go on thus from year to year for ever, and all the tasks which they accomplish for Him, and their tasks change not, but according as God hath ordained so is it done.

2. That the works at the beginning of every existing year, that all his works, are subservient to him, and invariable; yet as God has appointed, so are all things brought to pass.

3. And behold how the sea and the rivers in like manner accomplish and change not their tasks from His commandments'.

3. They see, too, how the seas and the rivers together complete their respective operations:

4. But ye--ye have not been steadfast,

4. But you endure not patiently,

12. ...But you have changed your works,
4. nor done the commandments of the Lord, 4. nor fulfill the commandments of the Lord; 13. [and have not done according to his command, and tran]sgressed against him;
But ye have turned away and spoken proud and hard words (and have spoken)haughty and harsh words,
With your impure mouths against His greatness. with your impure mouths,
Oh, ye hard-hearted, 5. You withered in heart, 14. [against his majesty, for your heart is hard].
ye shall find no peace. no peace shall be to you! You will have no peace.

5. Therefore shall ye execrate your days,

6. Therefore your days shall you curse,

And the years of your life shall perish, and the years of your lives shall perish;
And the years of your destruction shall be multiplied in eternal execration, perpetual execration shall be multiplied,
And ye shall find no mercy. and you shall not obtain mercy.

6a. In those days ye shall make your names an eternal execration unto all the righteous,

7. In those days shall you resign your peace with the eternal maledictions of all the righteous,

6b. And by you shall all who curse, curse, and sinners shall perpetually execrate you;
6c. And all the sinners and godless shall imprecate by you,

8. Shall execrate you with the ungodly.

6d. And all the {. . .}shall rejoice,
6e. And there shall be forgiveness of sins,
6f. And every mercy and peace and forbearance:
6g. There shall be salvation unto them, a goodly light.
6i. And for all of you sinners there shall be no salvation,
6j. But on you all shall abide a curse.

7a. But for the elect there shall be light and joy and peace,
7b. And they shall inherit the earth.

9. The elect shall possess light, joy, and peace; and they shall inherit the earth.

7c. And for you the godless there shall be a curse.

10. But you, you unholy, shall be accursed.

8. And then there shall be bestowed upon the elect wisdom,
And they shall all live

11. Then shall wisdom be given to the elect, all of whom shall live,

and never again sin,
Either through ungodliness or through pride:
and not again transgress by impiety or pride;
But they who are wise shall be humble. but shall humble themselves, possessing prudence,

9. And they shall not again transgress,

and shall not repeat transgression.
Nor shall they sin all the days of their life,

12. They shall not be condemned the whole period of their lives,

Nor shall they die of (the divine) anger or wrath, not die in torment and indignation;
But they shall complete the number of the days of their life. but the sum of their days shall be completed,
And their lives shall be increased in peace, and they shall grow old in peace;
And the years of their joy shall be multiplied, while the years of their happiness shall be multiplied with joy,
In eternal gladness and peace, and with peace, for ever,
All the days of their life. the whole duration of their existence.

SECTION TWO

Chapters 7-10, VII-X

Chapter 6, VI

Chapter 7, VII

1. And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters.

1. It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, that daughters were born to them, elegant and beautiful.

2. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.'

2. And when the angels, the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamoured of them, saying to each other, Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children.

3. And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: 'I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed,

3. Then their leader Samyaza said to them; I fear that you may perhaps be indisposed to the performance of this enterprise;

and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.'

4. And that I alone shall suffer for so grievous a crime.

4. And they all answered him and said: 'Let us all swear an oath,

5. But they answered him and said; We all swear;

and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.'

6. And bind ourselves by mutual execrations, that we will not change our intention, but execute our projected undertaking.

5. Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it.

7. Then they swore all together, and all bound themselves by mutual execrations.

6. And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, Their whole number was two hundred, who descended upon Ardis, which is the top of mount Armon.
and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it.

8. That mountain therefore was called Armon, because they had sworn upon it, and bound themselves by mutual execrations.

7. And these are the names of their leaders: Samlazaz, their leader, Araklba, Rameel, Kokablel, Tamlel, Ramlel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal, Asael, Armaros, Batarel, Ananel, Zaq1el, Samsapeel, Satarel, Turel, Jomjael, Sariel.

9. These are the names of their chiefs: Samyaza, who was their leader, Urakabarameel, Akibeel, Tamiel, Ramuel, Danel, Azkeel, Saraknyal, Asael, Armers, Batraal, Anane, Zavebe, Samsaveel, Ertael, Turel, Yomyael, Arazyal.

8. These are their chiefs of tens. These were the prefects of the two hundred angels, and the remainder were all with them.

1. And all the others together with them

10. Then they 13. [They (the leaders) and all ... of them
took unto themselves wives, took wives, took for themselves] 14. wives
and each chose for himself one, each choosing for himself; from all that they chose and
and they began to go in unto them whom they began to approach, [they began to cohabit with them
and to defile themselves with them, and with whom they cohabited; and to defile themselves with them];
and they taught them charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. teaching them sorcery, incantations, and the dividing of roots and trees. 15.and to teach them sorcery and [spells and the cutting of roots; and to acquaint them with herbs.]
2. And they became pregnant,

11. And the women conceiving

16. And they become pregnant by them
2. and they bare great giants,

11. brought forth giants,

16. and bo[re (great) giants
whose height was three thousand ells:

12. Whose stature was each three hundred cubits.

three thousand cubits high ...]
3. Who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, These devoured all which the labor of men produced; until it became impossible to feed them;
4. the giants turned against them and devoured mankind.

13. When they turned themselves against men, in order to devour them; These devoured all which the labor of men produced; until it became impossible to feed them;

5. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood.

14. And began to injure birds, beasts, reptiles, and fishes, to eat their flesh one after another, and to drink their blood.

6. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

15. Then the earth reproved the unrighteous.

Chapter 8, VIII

Chapter 8, VIII

1. And Azazel taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures.

1. Moreover Azazyel taught men to make swords, knives, shields, breastplates, the fabrication of mirrors, and the workmanship of bracelets and ornaments, the use of paint, the beautifying of the eyebrows, the use of stones of every valuable and select kind, and all sorts of dyes, so that the world became altered.

2. And there arose much godlessness, and they committed fornication, and they were led astray, and became corrupt in all their ways.

2. Impiety increased; fornication multiplied; and they transgressed and corrupted all their ways.

3. Semjaza taught enchantments, and root-cuttings,

3. Amazarak taught all the sorcerers, and dividers of roots:

'Armaros the resolving of enchantments,

4. Armers taught the solution of sorcery;

Baraqijal (taught) astrology,

5. Barkayal taught the observers of the stars,

Kokabel the constellations,

6. Akibeel taught signs;

Ezeqeel the knowledge of the clouds,

7. Tamiel taught astronomy;

Araqiel the signs of the earth, Shamsiel the signs of the sun, and Sariel the course of the moon.

8. And Asaradel taught the motion of the moon,

4. And as men perished, they cried, and their cry went up to heaven . . .

9. And men, being destroyed, cried out; and their voice reached to heaven.

Chapter 9, IX

Chapter 9, IX

1. And then Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel looked down from heaven and saw much blood being shed upon the earth, and all lawlessness being wrought upon the earth.

1. Then Michael and Gabriel, Raphael, Suryal, and Uriel, looked down from heaven, and saw the quantity of blood which was shed on earth, and all the iniquity which was done upon it,

2. And they said one to another: and said one to another, It is the voice of their cries;
'The earth made without inhabitant cries the voice of their cryingst up to the gates of heaven.

2. The earth deprived of her children has cried even to the gate of heaven.

3. And now to you, the holy ones of heaven, the souls of men make their suit, saying, "Bring our cause before the Most High."'

3. And now to you, O you holy one of heaven, the souls of men complain, saying, Obtain Justice for us with the Most High.

4. And they said to the Lord of the ages: 'Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings, and God of the ages, the throne of Thy glory (standeth) unto all the generations of the ages, and Thy name holy and glorious and blessed unto all the ages! Then they said to their Lord, the King, You are Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings. The throne of your glory is for ever and ever, and for ever and ever is your name sanctified and glorified. You are blessed and glorified.
5. Thou hast made all things, and power over all things hast Thou: and all things are naked and open in Thy sight, and Thou seest all 6 things, and nothing can hide itself from Thee.

4. You have made all things; you possess power over all things; and all things are open and manifest before you. You behold all things, and nothing can be concealed from you.

6. Thou seest what Azazel hath done, who hath taught all unrighteousness on earth and revealed the eternal secrets which were (preserved) in heaven, which men were striving to learn:

5. You have seen what Azazyel has done, how he has taught every species of iniquity upon earth, and has disclosed to the world all the secret things which are done in the heavens.

7. And Semjaza, to whom Thou hast given authority to bear rule over his associates.

6. Samyaza also has taught sorcery, to whom you have given authority over those who are associated with him.

8. And they have gone to the daughters of men upon the earth, and have slept with the women, and have defiled themselves, and revealed to them all kinds of sins. They have gone together to the daughters of men; have lain with them; have become polluted;

7. And have discovered crimes to them.

9. And the women have borne giants,

8. The women likewise have brought forth giants.

and the whole earth has thereby been filled with blood and unrighteousness.

9. Thus has the whole earth been filled with blood and with iniquity.

10. And now, behold, the souls of those who have died are crying

10. And now behold the souls of those who are dead, cry out.

and making their suit to the gates of heaven,

11. And complain even to the gate of heaven.

and their lamentations have ascended: and cannot cease because of the lawless deeds which are wrought on the earth.

12. Their groaning ascends; nor can they escape from the unrighteousness which is committed on earth.

11. And Thou knowest all things before they come to pass, You know all things, before they exist.
and Thou seest these things and Thou dost suffer them,

13. You know these things, and what has been done by them; yet you do not speak to us.

and Thou dost not say to us what we are to do to them in regard to these.'

14. What on account of these things ought we to do to them?

Chapter 10, X

Chapter 10, X

1. Then said the Most High, the Holy and Great One spake,

1. Then the Most High, the Great and Holy One spoke,

and sent Uriel to the son of Lamech,

2. And sent Arsayalalyur to the son of Lamech,

and said to him: 2. 'Go to Noah and tell him in my name "Hide thyself!"

3. Saying, Say to him in my name, Conceal yourself.

and reveal to him the end that is approaching: that the whole earth will be destroyed, and a deluge is about to come upon the whole earth, and will destroy all that is on it.

4. Then explain to him the consummation which is about to take place; for all the earth shall perish; the waters of a deluge shall come over the whole earth, and all things which are in it shall be destroyed.

3. And now instruct him that he may escape and his seed may be preserved for all the generations of the world.'

5. And now teach him how he may escape, and how his seed may remain in all the earth.

4. And again the Lord said to Raphael: 'Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein.

6. Again the Lord said to Raphael, Bind Azazyel hand and foot; cast him into darkness; and opening the desert which is in Dudael, cast him in there.

5. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness,

7. Throw upon him hurled and pointed stones, covering him with darkness;

and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light.

8. There shall he remain for ever; cover his face, that he may not see the light.

6. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire.

9. And in the great day of judgment let him be cast into the fire.

7. And heal the earth which the angels have corrupted, and proclaim the healing of the earth, that they may heal the plague,

10. Restore the earth, which the angels have corrupted; and announce life to it, that I may revive it.

and that all the children of men may not perish through all the secret things that the Watchers have disclosed and have taught their sons.

11. All the sons of men shall not perish in consequence of every secret, by which the Watchers have destroyed, and which they have taught, their offspring.

8. And the whole earth has been corrupted through the works that were taught by Azazel: to him ascribe all sin.'

12. All the earth has been corrupted by the effects of the teaching of Azazyel. To him therefore ascribe the whole crime.

9. And to Gabriel said the Lord: 'Proceed against the bastards and the reprobates, and against the children of fornication: and destroy [the children of fornication and] the children of the Watchers from amongst men [and cause them to go forth]: send them one against the other that they may destroy each other in battle: for length of days shall they not have.

13. To Gabriel also the Lord said, Go to the biters, to the reprobates, to the children of fornication; and destroy the children of fornication, the offspring of the Watchers, from among men; bring them forth, and excite them one against another. Let them perish by mutual slaughter; for length of days shall not be theirs.

10. And no request that they (i.e. their fathers) make of thee shall be granted unto their fathers on their behalf; for they hope to live an eternal life, and that each one of them will live five hundred years.'

14. They shall all entreat you, but their fathers shall not obtain their wishes respecting them; for they shall hope for eternal life, and that they may live, each of them, five hundred years.

11. And the Lord said unto Michael: 'Go, bind Semjaza and his associates who have united themselves with women so as to have defiled themselves with them in all their uncleanness.

15. To Michael likewise the Lord said, Go and announce his crime to Samyaza, and to the others who are with him, who have been associated with women, that they might be polluted with all their impurity.

12. And when their sons have slain one another, and they have seen the destruction of their beloved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement and of their consummation, till the judgement that is for ever and ever is consummated. And when all their sons shall be slain, when they shall see the perdition of their beloved, bind them for seventy generations underneath the earth, even to the day of judgment, and of consummation, until the judgment, the effect of which will last for ever, be completed.
12. And when their sons have slain one another, and they have seen the destruction of their beloved ones, bind them fast for seventy generations in the valleys of the earth, till the day of their judgement and of their consummation, till the judgement that is for ever and ever is consummated.

16. Then shall they be taken away into the lowest depths of the fire in torments; and in confinement shall they be shut up for ever.

13. In those days they shall be led off to the abyss of fire: and to the torment and the prison in which they shall be confined for ever.

17. Immediately after this shall he, together with them, burn and perish;

14. And whosoever shall be condemned and destroyed will from thenceforth be bound together with them to the end of all generations. they shall be bound until the consummation of many generations.
15. And destroy all the spirits of the reprobate and the children of the Watchers, because they have wronged mankind.

18. Destroy all the souls addicted to dalliance, and the offspring of the Watchers, for they have tyrannized over mankind.

16. Destroy all wrong from the face of the earth

18. Destroy all the souls addicted to dalliance, and the offspring of the Watchers, for they have tyrannized over mankind.

19. Let every oppressor perish from the face of the earth;

and let every evil work come to an end:

20. Let every evil work be destroyed;

and let the plant of righteousness and truth appear: and it shall prove a blessing;

21. The plant of righteousness and of rectitude appear, and its produce become a blessing.

the works of righteousness and truth' shall be planted in truth and joy for evermore.

22. Righteousness and rectitude shall be for ever planted with delight.

17. And then shall all the righteous escape,
And shall live till they beget thousands of children,
And all the days of their youth and their old age
Shall they complete in peace.

23. And then shall all the saints give thanks, and live until they have begotten a thousand children, while the whole period of their youth, and their sabbaths shall be completed in peace.

18. And then shall the whole earth be tilled in righteousness, and shall all be planted with trees and be full of blessing.

In those days all the earth shall be cultivated in righteousness; it shall be wholly planted with trees, and filled with benediction;
19. And all desirable trees shall be planted on it, every tree of delight shall be planted in it.
and they shall plant vines on it: and the vine which they plant thereon shall yield wine in abundance, and as for all the seed which is sown thereon each measure (of it) shall bear a thousand, and each measure of olives shall yield ten presses of oil.

24. In it shall vines be planted; and the vine which shall be planted in it shall yield fruit to satiety; every seed, which shall be sown in it, shall produce for one measure a thousand; and one measure of olives shall produce ten presses of oil.

20. And cleanse thou the earth from all oppression, and from all unrighteousness, and from all sin, and from all godlessness: and all the uncleanness that is wrought upon the earth destroy from off the earth.

25. Purify the earth from all oppression, from all injustice, from all crime, from all impiety, and from all the pollution which is committed upon it. Exterminate them from the earth.

21. And all the children of men shall become righteous, and all nations shall offer adoration and shall praise Me, and all shall worship Me.

26. Then shall all the children of men be righteous, and all nations shall pay me divine honours, and bless me; and all shall adore me.

22. And the earth shall be cleansed from all defilement, and from all sin, and from all punishment, and from all torment, and I will never again send (them) upon it from generation to generation and for ever.

27. The earth shall be cleansed from all corruption, from every crime, from all punishment, and from all suffering; neither will I again send a deluge upon it from generation to generation for ever.

Chapter 11, XI

1. And in those days I will open the store chambers of blessing which are in the heaven, so as to send them down upon the earth over the work and labour of the children of men.

28. In those days I will open the treasures of blessing which are in heaven, that I may cause them to descend upon earth, and upon all the works and labour of man.

2. And truth and peace shall be associated together throughout all the days of the world and throughout all the generations of men.'

29. Peace and equity shall associate with the sons of men all the days of the world, in every generation of it.

Chapter 12, XII

Chapter 12, XII

1. Before these things Enoch was hidden, and no one of the children of men knew where he was hidden, and where he abode, and what had become of him.

1. Before all these things Enoch was concealed; nor did any one of the sons of men know where he was concealed, where he had been, and what had happened.

2. And his activities had to do with the Watchers, and his days were with the holy ones.

2. He was wholly engaged with the holy ones, and with the Watchers in his days.

3. And I Enoch was blessing the Lord of majesty and the King of the ages,

3. I, Enoch, was blessing the great Lord and King of peace.

and lo! the Watchers called me -Enoch the scribe-

4. And behold the Watchers called me Enoch the scribe.

and said to me:

5. Then the Lord said to me:

4. 'Enoch, thou scribe of righteousness, go, declare to the Watchers of the heaven who have left the high heaven, the holy eternal place, and have defiled themselves with women, Enoch, scribe of righteousness, go tell the Watchers of heaven, who have deserted the lofty sky, and their holy everlasting station, who have been polluted with women.
and have done as the children of earth do, and have taken unto themselves wives: "Ye have wrought great destruction on the earth:

6. And have done as the sons of men do, by taking to themselves wives, and who have been greatly corrupted on the earth;

5. And ye shall have no peace nor forgiveness of sin: and inasmuch as they delight themselves in their children,

7. That on the earth they shall never obtain peace and remission of sin. For they shall not rejoice in their offspring;

6. The murder of their beloved ones shall they see, and over the destruction of their children shall they lament, and shall make supplication unto eternity, but mercy and peace shall ye not attain."' they shall behold the slaughter of their beloved; shall lament for the destruction of their sons; and shall petition for ever; but shall not obtain mercy and peace.

Chapter 13, XIII

Chapter 13, XIII

1. And Enoch went and said: 'Azazel, thou shalt have no peace: a severe sentence has gone forth against thee to put thee in bonds:

1. Then Enoch, passing on, said to Azazyel: You shalt not obtain peace. A great sentence is gone forth against you. He shall bind you;

2. And thou shalt not have toleration nor request granted to thee, because of the unrighteousness which thou hast taught,

2. Neither shall relief, mercy, and supplication be yours, on account of the oppression which you have taught;

and because of all the works of godlessness and unrighteousness and sin which thou hast shown to men.'

3. And on account of every act of blasphemy, tyranny, and sin, which you have discovered to the children of men.

3. Then I went and spoke to them all together,

4. Then departing from him I spoke to them all together;

and they were all afraid, and fear and trembling seized them.

5. And they all became terrified, and trembled;

4. And they besought me to draw up a petition for them that they might find forgiveness, and to read their petition in the presence of the Lord of heaven.

6. Beseeching me to write for them a memorial of supplication, that they might obtain forgiveness; and that I might make the memorial of their prayer ascend up before the God of heaven;

5. For from thenceforward they could not speak (with Him) nor lift up their eyes to heaven for shame of their sins for which they had been condemned. because they could not themselves thenceforwards address him, nor raise up their eyes to heaven on account of the disgraceful offence for which they were judged.
6. Then I wrote out their petition, and the prayer in regard to their spirits and their deeds individually and in regard to their requests that they should have forgiveness and length.

7. Then I wrote a memorial of their prayer and supplications, for their spirits, for everything which they had done, and for the subject of their entreaty, that they might obtain remission and rest.

7. And I went off and sat down at the waters of Dan, in the land of Dan, to the south of the west of Hermon: I read their petition till I fell asleep.

8. Proceeding on, I continued over the waters of Danbadan, which is on the right to the west of Armon, reading the memorial of their prayer, until I fell asleep.

8. And behold a dream came to me, and visions fell down upon me, and I saw visions of chastisement, and a voice came bidding (me) I to tell it to the sons of heaven, and reprimand them.

9. And behold a dream came to me, and visions appeared above me. I fell down and saw a vision of punishment, that I might relate it to the sons of heaven, and reprove them.

9. And when I awaked, I came unto them, and they were all sitting gathered together, weeping in 'Abelsjail, which is between Lebanon and Seneser, with their faces covered. When I awoke I went to them. All being collected together stood weeping in Oubelseyael, which is situated between Libanos and Seneser, with their faces veiled.
10. And I recounted before them all the visions which I had seen in sleep,

10. I related in their presence all the visions which I had seen, and my dream;

and I began to speak the words of righteousness, and to reprimand the heavenly Watchers.

11. And began to utter these words of righteousness, reproving the Watchers of heaven.

Chapter 14, XIV

Chapter 14, XIV

1. The book of the words of righteousness, and of the reprimand of the eternal Watchers in accordance with the command of the Holy Great One in that vision.

1. This is the book of the words of righteousness, and of the reproof of the Watchers, who belong to the world, according to that which He, who is holy and great, commanded in the vision.

2. I saw in my sleep what I will now say with a tongue of flesh and with the breath of my mouth: which the Great One has given to men to converse therewith and understand with the heart. I perceived in my dream, that I was now speaking with a tongue of flesh, and with my breath, which the Mighty One has put into the mouth of men, that they might converse with it.
and understand with the heart.

2. And understand with the heart.

3. As He has created and given to man the power of understanding the word of wisdom, so hath He created me also and given me the power of reprimanding the Watchers, the children of heaven. As he has created and given to men the power of comprehending the word of understanding, so has he created and given to me the power of reproving the Watchers, the offspring of heaven.
4. I wrote out your petition, and in my vision it appeared thus, that your petition will not be granted unto you throughout all the days of eternity, I have written your petition; and in my vision it has been shown me, that what you request will not be granted you as long as the world endures.
and that judgement has been finally passed upon you: yea (your petition) will not be granted unto you.

3. Judgment has been passed upon you: your request will not be granted you.

5. And from henceforth you shall not ascend into heaven unto all eternity, and in bonds of the earth the decree has gone forth to bind you for all the days of the world.

4. From this time forward, never shall you ascend into heaven; He has said, that on the earth He will bind you, as long as the world endures.

6. And (that) previously you shall have seen the destruction of your beloved sons and ye shall have no pleasure in them, but they shall fall before you by the sword.

5. But before these things you shall behold the destruction of your beloved sons; you shall not possess them, but they shall fall before you by the sword.

7. And your petition on their behalf shall not be granted, nor yet on your own:

6. Neither shall you entreat for them, not for yourselves;

even though you weep and pray and speak all the words contained in the writing which I have written.

7. But you shall weep and supplicate in silence. The words of the book which I wrote.

8. And the vision was shown to me thus:

8. A vision thus appeared to me.

Behold, in the vision clouds invited me and a mist summoned me, and the course of the stars and the lightnings sped and hastened me, and the winds in the vision caused me to fly and lifted me upward,

9. Behold, in that vision clouds and a mist invited me; agitated stars and flashes of lightning impelled and pressed me forwards, while winds in the vision assisted my flight, accelerating my progress.

and bore me into heaven.

10. They elevated me aloft to heaven.

9. And I went in till I drew nigh to a wall which is built of crystals and surrounded by tongues of fire: and it began to affright me. I proceeded, until I arrived at a wall built with stones of crystal. A vibrating flame surrounded it, which began to strike me with terror.
10. And I went into the tongues of fire

11. Into this vibrating flame I entered;

and drew nigh to a large house which was built of crystals: and the walls of the house were like a tesselated floor (made) of crystals, and its groundwork was of crystal.

12. And drew nigh to a spacious habitation built also with stones of crystal. Its walls too, as well as pavement, were formed with stones of crystal, and crystal likewise was the ground.

11. Its ceiling was like the path of the stars and the lightnings, and between them were fiery Cherubim, and their heaven was (clear as) water. Its roof had the appearance of agitated stars and flashes of lightning; and among them were cherubim of fire in a stormy sky.
12. A flaming fire surrounded the walls, and its portals blazed with fire. A flame burned around its walls; and its portal blazed with fire.
13. And I entered into that house, and it was hot as fire and cold as ice: there were no delights of life therein: fear covered me, and trembling got hold upon me. When I entered into this dwelling, it was hot as fire and cold as ice. No trace of delight or of life was there. Terror overwhelmed me, and a fearful shaking seized me.
14. And as I quaked and trembled, I fell upon my face.

13. Violently agitated and trembling, I fell upon my face.

15. And I beheld a vision, In the vision I looked.
And lo! there was a second house, greater than the former, and the entire portal stood open before me, and it was built of flames of fire.

14. And behold there was another habitation more spacious than the former, every entrance to which was open before me, erected in the midst of a vibrating flame.

16. And in every respect it so excelled in splendour and magnificence and extent that I cannot describe to you its splendour and its extent.

15. So greatly did it excel in all points, in glory, in magnificence, and in magnitude, that it is impossible to describe to you either the splendour or the extent of it.

17. And its floor was of fire, and above it were lightnings and the path of the stars, and its ceiling also was flaming fire.

16. Its floor was on fire; above were lightnings and agitated stars, while its roof exhibited a blazing fire.

18. And I looked and saw therein a lofty throne:

17. Attentively I surveyed it, and saw that it contained an exalted throne;

its appearance was as crystal, and the wheels thereof as the shining sun, and there was the vision of Cherubim.

18. The appearance of which was like that of frost; while its circumference resembled the orb of the brilliant sun; and there was the voice of the cherubim.

19. And from underneath the throne came streams of flaming fire

19. From underneath this mighty throne rivers of flaming fire issued.

so that I could not look thereon.

20. To look upon it was impossible.

20. And the Great Glory sat thereon,

21. One great in glory sat upon it:

and His raiment shone more brightly than the sun and was whiter than any snow.

22. Whose robe was brighter than the sun, and whiter than snow.

21. None of the angels could enter and could behold His face by reason of the magnificence and glory and no flesh could behold Him.

23. No angel was capable of penetrating to view the face of Him, the Glorious and the Effulgent; nor could any mortal behold Him.

22. The flaming fire was round about Him, A fire was flaming around Him.
and a great fire stood before Him, and none around could draw nigh Him: ten thousand times ten thousand (stood) before Him, yet He needed no counselor.

24. A fire also of great extent continued to rise up before Him; so that not one of those who surrounded Him was capable of approaching Him, among the myriads of myriads who were before Him. To Him holy consultation was needless.

23. And the most holy ones who were nigh to Him did not leave by night nor depart from Him. Yet did not the sanctified, who were near Him, depart far from Him either by night or by day; nor were they removed from Him.
24. And until then I had been prostrate on my face, trembling: and the Lord called me with His own mouth, and said to me: ' Come hither, Enoch, and hear my word.' I also was so far advanced, with a veil on my face, and trembling. Then the Lord with his own mouth called me, saying, Approach hither, Enoch, at my holy word.
25. And one of the holy ones came to me and waked me, and He made me rise up and approach the door: and I bowed my face downwards.

25. And He raised me up, making me draw near even to the entrance. My eye was directed to the ground.

Chapter 15, XV

Chapter 15, XV

1. And He answered and said to me, and I heard His voice: 'Fear not, Enoch, thou righteous man and scribe of righteousness: approach hither and hear my voice.

1. Then addressing me, He spoke and said, Hear, neither be afraid, O righteous Enoch, you scribe of righteousness: approach hither, and hear my voice.

2. And go, say to the Watchers of heaven, who have sent thee to intercede for them: "You should intercede" for men, and not men for you: Go, say to the Watchers of heaven, who have sent you to pray for them, You ought to pray for men, and not men for you.
3. Wherefore have ye left the high, holy, and eternal heaven, and lain with women, and defiled yourselves with the daughters of men and taken to yourselves wives, and done like the children of earth, and begotten giants (as your) sons?

2. Wherefore have you forsaken the lofty and holy heaven, which endures for ever, and have lain with women; have defile yourselves with the daughters of men; have taken to yourselves wives; have acted like the sons of the earth, and have begotten an impious offspring?

4. And though ye were holy, spiritual, living the eternal life, you have defiled yourselves with the blood of women, and have begotten (children) with the blood of flesh, and, as the children of men, have lusted after flesh and blood as those also do

3. You being spiritual, holy, and possessing a life which is eternal, have polluted yourselves with women; have begotten in carnal blood; have lusted in the blood of men; and have done as those who are flesh and blood do.

who die and perish.

4. These however die and perish.

5. Therefore have I given them wives also that they might impregnate them, and beget children by them, that thus nothing might be wanting to them on earth.

5. Therefore have I given to them wives, that they might cohabit with them; that sons might be born of them; and that this might be transacted upon earth.

6. But you were formerly spiritual, living the eternal life, and immortal for all generations of the world.

6. But you from the beginning were made spiritual, possessing a life which is eternal, and not subject to death for ever.

7. And therefore I have not appointed wives for you; for as for the spiritual ones of the heaven, in heaven is their dwelling.

7. Therefore I made not wives for you, because, being spiritual, your dwelling is in heaven.

8. And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling.

8. Now the giants, who have been born of spirit and of flesh, shall be called upon earth evil spirits, and on earth shall be their habitation.

9. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; they shall be evil spirits on earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. Evil spirits shall proceed from their flesh, because they were created from above; from the holy Watchers was their beginning and primary foundation. Evil spirits shall they be upon earth, and the spirits of the wicked shall they be called.
10. [As for the spirits of heaven, in heaven shall be their dwelling, but as for the spirits of the earth which were born upon the earth, on the earth shall be their dwelling.] The habitation of the spirits of heaven shall be in heaven; but upon earth shall be the habitation of terrestrial spirits, who are born on earth.
11. And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth,

9. The spirits of the giants shall be like clouds, which shall oppress, corrupt, fall, content, and bruise upon earth.

and cause trouble:

10. They shall cause lamentation.

they take no food, but nevertheless hunger and thirst, and cause offences. No food shall they eat; and they shall be thirsty; they shall be concealed,
12. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them. and shall not rise up against the sons of men, and against women; for they come forth during the days of slaughter and destruction.

Chapter 16, XVI

Chapter 16, XVI

1. From the days of the slaughter and destruction and death of the giants, from the souls of whose flesh the spirits, having gone forth, shall destroy without incurring judgement -thus shall they destroy until the day of the consummation, the great judgement in which the age shall be consummated, over the Watchers and the godless, yea, shall be wholly consummated."

1. And as to the death of the giants, wheresoever their spirits depart from their bodies, let their flesh, that which is perishable, be without judgment. Thus shall they perish, until the day of the great consummation of the great world. A destruction shall take place of the Watchers and the impious.

2. And now as to the watchers who have sent thee to intercede for them, who had been aforetime in heaven,

2. And now to the Watchers, who have sent you to pray for them, who in the beginning were in heaven,

(say to them):

3. Say,

3. "You have been in heaven, but all the mysteries had not yet been revealed to you, and you knew worthless ones, In heaven have you been; secret things, however, have not been manifested to you; yet have you known a reprobated mystery.
and these in the hardness of your hearts you have made known to the women, and through these mysteries women and men work much evil on earth."

4. And this you have related to women in the hardness of your heart, and by that mystery have women and mankind multiplied evils upon the earth.

4. Say to them therefore: " You have no peace."'

5. Say to them, Never therefore shall you obtain peace.

Chapter 17, XVII

Chapter 17, XVII

1. And they took and brought me to a place in which those who were there were like flaming fire, and, when they wished, they appeared as men.

1. They raised me up into a certain place, where there was the appearance of a burning fire; and when they pleased they assumed the likeness of men.

2. And they brought me to the place of darkness, and to a mountain the point of whose summit reached to heaven.

2. They carried me to a lofty spot, to a mountain, the top of which reach to heaven.

3. And I saw the places of the luminaries and the treasuries of the stars and of the thunder and in the uttermost depths, where were a fiery bow and arrows and their quiver, and a fiery sword and all the lightnings.

3. And I beheld the receptacles of light and of thunder at the extremities of the place, where it was deepest. There was a bow of fire, and arrows in their quiver, a sword of fire, and every species of lightning.

4. And they took me to the living waters, and to the fire of the west, which receives every setting of the sun.

4. Then they elevated me to a babbling stream, and to a fire in the west, which received all the setting of the sun.

5. And I came to a river of fire in which the fire flows like water and discharges itself into the great sea towards the west. I came to a river of fire, which flowed like water, and emptied itself into the great sea westwards.
6. I saw the great rivers and came to the great river and to the great darkness, and went to the place where no flesh walks.

5. I saw every large river, until I arrived at the great darkness. I went to where all of flesh migrate;

7. I saw the mountains of the darkness of winter and the place whence all the waters of the deep flow. and I beheld the mountains of the gloom which constitutes winter, and the place from which issues the water in every abyss.
8. I saw the mouths of all the rivers of the earth and the mouth of the deep.

6. I saw also the mouths of all the rivers in the world, and the mouths of the deep.

Chapter 18, XVIII

Chapter 18, XVIII

1. I saw the treasuries of all the winds: I saw how He had furnished with them the whole creation and the firm foundations of the earth.

1. I then surveyed the receptacles of all the winds, perceiving that they contributed to adorn the whole creation, and to preserve the foundation of the earth.

2. And I saw the corner-stone of the earth:

2. I surveyed the stone which supports the corners of the earth.

I saw the four winds which bear [the earth and] the firmament of the heaven.

3. I also beheld the four winds, which bear up the earth, and the firmament of heaven.

3. And I saw how the winds stretch out the vaults of heaven,

4. And I beheld the winds occupying the exalted sky.

and have their station between heaven and earth: these are the pillars of the heaven.

5. Arising in the midst of heaven and of earth, and constituting the pillars of heaven.

4. I saw the winds of heaven which turn and bring the circumference of the sun and all the stars to their setting.

6. I saw the winds which turn the sky, which cause the orb of the sun and of all the stars to set;

5. I saw the winds on the earth carrying the clouds: and over the earth I saw the winds which support the clouds.
I saw the paths of the angels.

7. I saw the path of the angels.

I saw at the end of the earth the firmament of the heaven above.

8. I perceived at the extremity of the earth the firmament of heaven above it.

6. And I proceeded Then I passed on
towards the south;
and saw a place which burns day and night, where there are seven mountains of magnificent stones, three towards the east, and three towards the south.

9. Where burnt, both by day and night, six mountains formed of glorious stones; three towards the east, and three towards the south.

Then I passed on towards the south;
7. And as for those towards the east, was of coloured stone, and one of pearl, and one of jacinth, and those towards the south of red stone.

10. Those which were towards the east were of a variegated stone; one of which was of margarite, and another of antimony. Those towards the south were of a red stone.

8. But the middle one reached to heaven like the throne of God, of alabaster, and the summit of the throne was of sapphire. The middle one reached to heaven like the throne of God; a throne composed of alabaster, the top of which was of sapphire.
9. And I saw a flaming fire. 10. And beyond these mountains Is a region the end of the great earth: there the heavens were completed. I saw, too, a blazing fire hanging over all the mountains.

11. And there I saw a place on the other side of an extended territory, where waters were collected.

11. And I saw a deep abyss, with columns of heavenly fire, and among them I saw columns of fire fall, which were beyond measure alike towards the height and towards the depth.

12. I likewise beheld terrestrial fountains, deep in the fiery columns of heaven.

13. And in the columns of heaven I beheld fires, which descended without number, but neither on high, nor into the deep.

12. And beyond that abyss I saw a place which had no firmament of the heaven above, and no firmly founded earth beneath it: there was no water upon it, and no birds, but it was a waste and horrible place. Over these fountains also I perceived a place which had neither the firmament of heaven above it, nor the solid ground underneath it; neither was there water above it; nor anything on wing; but the spot was desolate.
13. I saw there seven stars like great burning mountains, and to me, when I inquired regarding them,

14. And there I beheld seven stars, like great blazing mountains, and like spirits entreating me.

14. The angel said: 'This place is the end of heaven and earth: this has become a prison for the stars and the host of heaven.

15. Then the angel said, This place, until the consummation of heaven and earth, will be the prison of the stars, and the host of heaven.

15. And the stars which roll over the fire are they which have transgressed the commandment of the Lord in the beginning of their rising, because they did not come forth at their appointed times.

16. The stars which roll over fire are those which transgressed the commandment of God before their time arrived; for they came not in their proper season.

16. And He was wroth with them, and bound them till the time when their guilt should be consummated (even) for ten thousand years.' Therefore was He offended with them, and bound them, until the period of the consummation of their crimes in the secret year.
